Scrap Car London FAQ

Scrap Car London – Frequently Asked Questions

It’s fair to say that scrapping your car for the first time can be a daunting situation. Many people can go through their whole lives without needing to scrap a car, which means there’s not always someone on hand to help you every step of the way. Or there wasn’t until now. At Scrap Car London we try our best to make the process as simple as possible for you, but it’s natural to still have some questions. We’ll answer them for you here.

How much money can I get for scrapping my car?

This is often the first question you’ll think about when you start to investigate the idea of scrapping your car. Although it’s very difficult for scrap dealers to answer that question and provide you with a quote, we can tell you about the type of factors that we look at in order to work out the price. These include:

  • Make and model of the car
  • Age
  • Weight
  • Trim level
  • Any specialist components

This allows us to work out exactly what quantity of raw materials are within the car and therefore what the market price is for these components. We at Scrap Car London, can provide you with a guaranteed price within 20 seconds if you provide us with some initial information. You can call us now on 020 3893 2261, or head over to Scrap Car London where you can request a quote by filling out our Quote Request Form.

Do I have to empty my car before you’ll collect it?

We encourage all of our customers to empty their cars before the vehicle is ready for scrap car collection. Common belongings that people accidentally leave in their cars are things like phone mounts, USB cables, drivings kits in the boot and documentation in the glove box. You’ll want to make sure you check every bit of storage in the car because you won’t be able to reclaim these items once the vehicle is scrapped.

It probably goes without saying, but the car must also be free of any rubbish or litter. We are only equipped to deal with scrapping your vehicle, and do not have facilities to properly dispose of customers’ litter as part of our scrap car london services.

What is an ATF (Authorised Treatment Facility)?

If you’ve started carrying out some research on scrapping your vehicle, then you’ll likely have come across the term ATF. This stands for Authorised Treatment Facility. An ATF is an organisation that has been audited to confirm that it is proven to follow the strict guidelines established by the Environment Agency.

These ELV (End of Life Vehicle) guidelines are in place to ensure that the vehicle is disposed of responsibly, in a way that is sustainable and has no impact on the environment. If you find a scrap yard that isn’t an ATF, then you should not trade with them under any circumstance. They will likely dismantle your car illegally and not complete the necessary paper work to officially notify the DVLA.

What is a COD (Certificate of Destruction)?

When an Authorised Treatment Facility disposes of your car, they will report the destruction of your car to the DVLA. The Certificate of Destruction (COD) is the document that the DVLA will send to you to confirm that this has been added to their records.

This certificate is important as it is confirmation that the process has been followed in line with the regulations set out by the Environment Agency. It also ensures that you are no longer responsible for the car and should for some reason fines be issued after the date on the certificate, you will not be liable to pay them.

If you need to cancel your insurance then the insurer will likely request a copy of our COD. Once the COD is provided to the insurer, then it is worthwhile storing in your records in case you need to use it as evidence in the future.

Can I Scrap My Car Without a V5C?

A V5C is what many people refer to as a logbook and yes it is possible to scrap your car without a V5C. This document is useful as it proves that you are the registered owner of the vehicle and has all the relevant information on it. It’s very handy for letting the DVLA know when the vehicle has changed owners, which is the process you’ll need to follow when selling the car to a scrap dealer.

However, fear not. If the logbook is not available, we’ll just ask you to provide the relevant detailers then rather than taking them from the V5C. You’ll need to provide a proof of address (I.e utility bill, council tax bill) from within the past 3 months, as well as a form of photo ID to prove you are who you say you are. We won’t need to take this information away, but just need to check to make sure that it is a legitimate transaction.

Once this criteria has been satisfied, we can proceed with the process of taking your vehicle away and depositing the money into your bank account!

Will you haggle on collection?

We take pride in giving our customers a firm offer up front. We do this because we know you want to know how much money you can get for your car, so that you can make plans around this income. It’s for this reason that we will never give our customers an amazing offer up front in an effort to reel you in, and then arrive and try to low ball you.

The price you are offered is the scrap car price you will be paid. We will also not arrive and try to give you an alternative cash price. We do not deal in cash as this is against the legislation brought in in 2013 and you should avoid any scrap dealer than encourages you to complete the transaction in cash.

Will you collect my vehicle without wheels?

Unfortunately, we will not collect your vehicle without wheels and it’s unlikely that any other scrap dealer would too. The reason for this is that it takes a significant amount of time and equipment to scrap a vehicle that cannot move. It would require specialist lifting equipment each time the vehicle needs moving not just at your property, but also throughout the scrapping process.

If you do manage to find a dealer that will collect your car without wheels, then they will likely offer you a very low price or only offer to collect it for free. This is why it’s highly recommended that you leave the wheels on a vehicle that you wish to be scrapped.

Can I scrap a car without keys?

A car can be scrapped without the keys, but it isn’t ideal and where possible you should have the keys for the car. If this situation is unavoidable then you will be required to supply the V5C to prove that you are the owner of the vehicle, otherwise that could be anyone’s car that you are trying to destroy. If you do not have the V5C either, then is some cases the dealer might agree to take the car away but will hold off on the payment until you can provide proof that it is your vehicle.

It’s also likely that the inconvenience will impact the price that you are offered. Without the keys, the car becomes a lot more difficult to be transported, as the steering lock will be engaged so it becomes hard to get it into the trailer. There is also the issue of the handbrake. A potential solution might be to break the window and disengage the handbrake, but this too is inconvenient and comes with safety risks.

It will be much more beneficial for you to pay the cost of replacing the keys than ask a Scrap Car London dealer to transport the vehicle without them, due to the impact it will have on the price on offer.
